I would not waste money on the conversion myself. I just don't see the benefit of being able to fire a whole lot more rounds of the sort that you won't shoot in the gun when you need it. I do have a Ciener conversion for my AR15, but that's a little different because it's basically just a chamber adapter and magazine since the bore is already .22. Actually, it still didn't make me like the AR15 any more. I guess I just prefer walnut stocks and parkerized steel over plastic stocks and black aluminum.
One thing I'd avoid in terms of practice ammo is this cheap Swedish surplus 9 mm that comes on Uzi stripper clips in blue boxes with slanted sides. Its bullets consist of a hard plastic carrier holding a large steel ball. I think they'd do an effective job of ball-peening the rifling out of your barrel.
Even at today's insane prices, can't you get 1000 rounds of 9mm reloads for $300? Seems like that's a whole lot of practice.
