This is a sad situation and American companies have seen this comming for years. The Japanese and Germans make darn good products because they focused on quality that resulted in highly reliable cars/trucks. We Americans have talked it, but failed to walk it. Chrysler has tried, but had to my component failures, transmissions specifically. There design of sensors and relays are such, when one fails it causes others to fail. This is ok, if your wealthy and can afford the several thousand dollar repair bills, most many of us can't. Back in the sixties when tv commercials for Toyota showed their little trucks going 120,000 miles with no problems, we ignored it and now it's caught up to us. Most of the dealer money is made in service, and most people like to hear "no problems" when they do take there car in for service. This is a No brainer for the customer who looks for good value when spending their money.
The other problem are CEOs that come in for high salaries/bonuses and really don't care what happens to the company because they will be off to the next. It will be a feather in their cap if they can turn a company back into profits, but there comes a time when it may be too late. To win this auto manufacturing war and that is what it is, we Americans MUST have the quality that will beat the foriegn companies - period!
