Without inspecting your truck personally, what you describe sounds to me exactly like a broken front axle.
You may not have heard any unusual noises at first because the axle was a fresh break. I am afraid the noises you are hearing now may be caused by all of the little axle shards and pieces migrating into the bearings and gears. If a particularly large chunk gets lodged in between the teeth of the gears, the truck will stall as you describe. I hate to be the bearor of bad news, but if you have been trying to operate the truck with a broken axle, you may have been causing other more major and expensive damage to occure.
It is not uncommon to break a front axle while trying to pull a heavy load in reverse. The number one rule is to NEVER pull in reverse. Old axles gradually take a twist over years of pulling in the forward direction. They do not like to twist back. Twisted axles will usually snap rather abruptly if heavily loaded in the opposite direction.
I hope what I describe is not the case for you. A good place to start checking is to do as DC and Daryl described.
