I agree - first thing to check is the front end - if it seems Ok then drop the front drive shaft out and check it again. Next try the transfer without the shaft. Check uni joints while you are at it - a crook (broken/damaged/sick) one can do what you explain. By doing these checks you should have some idea where the actual problem is.
