Where do you store your highway flares?

Yesterday I was taking a windshield wiper valence out of a parts truck. I had all of the spot welds drilled out and started cutting the weld at the end with a cutoff wheel. Smoke started coming out the wiper motor plate hole. Hit a mouse nest I figured, no big deal. Then there was a loud WHOOOSH and a bright red light filled the valence. Lots of smoke too. Someone had decided the valence would be a good storage place for a highway flare. Never seen that before!
