Nice thoughts. I have always had dogs and had special relationships with them. Seeing their life come to an end is a most painful experience.
I remember a little story something like: If you really want to find out who loves you more, your wife or your dog, lock them both in the trunk of your car for couple of hours and see which one is happy to see you when you let them out. :)
