I'd tend to think it might have overheated due to braking. Take a look at the shoe, not much left and what is there is pretty ragged rather than smooth. If it was the bearing that failed, seems to me there wouldn't be that much grease buildup left, it would have melted or perhaps burned? Just a thought or two. How about a RR fellow weighing in on this>
