If that is a civvie pump, the combination will wobble the shaft, leading to wear in the distributor and fatigue of the hold-down clamp.
But do that later, check the water pump gasket first. The oval hole in the gasket is the water outlet, the big round hole is only for a dinky little pee hole, I think it keeps the pump from cavitating er sumpthin.
Overheating on initial start up might be a thermostat in wrong side up. The copper slug goes towards engine. Or, if you haven't changed it, it may be bad. Take it out and put it in a pot of hot water on the stove. You ought to see it open up long before the water comes to a boil, probably shortly after the little fine gas bubbles come out, that's usually about 150f.
