Starters wear brushes first, then the bushing in the nose cone, and occasionally the drive.
Alternators wear brushes most, then regulators, lastly bearings. Diodes and coils rarely.
Brushes cost about $2, you'll need a big soldering iron to replace the ones in a starter. Alternators are just screws- Mopar alts are doable from outside, while mounted in the chassis! Delcos need some disassembly, and special tool- a toothpick.
