I am not a computer professional, but living near the D.C. area I know several people who work in the national security field.
It is scary in many ways. One guy I know who is a computer professional told me he recently took apart some common computers sold here in the USA and was surprised at the great extent of Chinese made components...the implication had to do with our security...many government officials use these same computer brands.
On a different but related note, another security guy told me that the original Concorde supersonic airliners had built in "snooping" cameras that looked down on the passengers and allowed the French to do industrial espionage for a time, until they were "exposed" and the cameras removed. So, even though the cold war is over, spying is alive and very well.
