Hi Copey,
The truck was 6 volt, and had 2 6 volt batteries. If I recall correctly, the only time you had 12 volts was when the key was in the start position. It then clicked back to 6 volt. It was called a series / parallel switch. I still have it as I bought the truck back last fall from the guy who bought it from me a long time ago.
I think I still have the instruction booklet, which would probably be able to tell if there was an option for full time 12 volt power.
