The axle with the offset diff was already on the shelf, having been the one developed to allow the WC modification to 6 x 6 during WW2.
In 6 x 6 operation, with the front axle out, that short shaft would be seeing only 1/4 of the engine torque so no huge problem, but when you put it in a 4 x 4 with the front axle out it takes twice as much.
