copey - the skinny on the centered rear is that it reduces spare axles to one and it allows the driveshaft to be relocated on the back of the transfer case to a position that reduces bearing noise and driveline wear. on a stock powered truck, its likely not worth the effort. on a repower, the transfer case really sings and the move enables higher sustained rpms and lowers tc heat.
