Gas Tank sending unit

I've decided to refurbish my original gas tank because it's not in that bad a shape. Now that I have the sending unit out, how do I bench test it with out the gauge? Interestingly enough the float appears to be nothing more than 2 pieces of cork. Any ideas on where to get a new sending unit if this one proves NG.
