Back in the 80s a friend of mine had a Dart with a slant 6 that lost compression in one cylinder. He just pulled the rocker arms off of the dead cylinder and ran it for several years as a "slant 5". It's a pretty tough little mill.
A clogged oil passage can kill any rod or main in short order no matter what the engine. Be careful with silicone sealer that a glob of it can't come loose and get into the oil system. Still, the gas in the oil situation sounds more like a bad fuel pump to me. I'd sure check that first.
