What you see in the photo are the stock parts for a WDX-WM300 Power-Wagon. I agree, a lot of other model trucks had rounded U-bolts that wrapped around and followed the radius of the axle tube, but not the WDX-WM300. Its U-bolts ("clips"), front and rear, have a squared off shape that mates to a "bumpter" resting on top of the spring. The "plates" located under the springs are also what the shock absorbers mount to.
Note also that the original "clips" are forged with a flattened cross section where they rest on the bumper. This gives them a flat surface that contacts the bumper surface instead of a single line contact that you would have when using U-bolts bent from round rod. These were much stronger better engineered U-bolts, in my opinion, that replacements available today. I have never had one on any of my trucks that ever stretched and/or needed retorqued after removal and reinstall.
