When I was a kid, we always went to Long Beach (WA) for the 4th of July. Back then, the whole beach was open to driving -- something like 20 miles of hard-packed flat sand when the tide was out, and the bigger kids liked to race on it, which of course was illegal. Being as how I was just a little boy, I always enjoyed watching the frantic efforts of the big boys to dig their stuck rigs out of the sand as the tide came in around them. Sometimes they succeeded and sometimes not.
Most of the time, the friend who tried to pull them out with another rig got stuck too. The best method of getting unstuck seemed to be collecting a large enough group of friends (with enough beer) to pretty well lift the rig out of its hole. Where they got stuck was in the soft sand near the high tide line, so even if the tide came in around their rig, the water didn't get too deep and then they'd try again after the tide went out.
