I have experienced the slow cranking as well. It usually came after rebuilding an engine and often after replacing a starter. I went through several starters before figuring out the problem. I always would paint everything so well that I was creating grounding problems. The starters weren't bad at all. When ever I have a slow cranking problem I pull the starter and clean the mating surface. Replace the battery if needed. Then disconnect and clean the lugs on the cables. Six volt systems work great put don't have a lot of tolerence for bad connections. If you can buy the srarters cheap, DO IT. Then sell them to all the people that think they have a problem.
