Intermittent electrical problems are some of the hardest things to fix. Most of us wouldn't think of looking INSIDE the generator. For wrapping up wiring that might rub against something, I prefer a cloth tape, since any kins of vinyl or rubber can gradually flow out. Old-fashioned friction tape would be fine, if they still make it. I have a bunch of kapton film left over form my engineering days, so I usually put a piece of that in whenever some wire is likely to rub or short against something else. It's very tough against getting punctured or rubbed through. I also have some high-temperature fiberglass tape that's good for stuff that's liable to get warm.
