Herder maybe? Or just too smart?
My niece had a Blue Heeler mix that used to catch frisbees, until it hurt it's lip on a catch. Wouldn't catch anything out of the air anymore after that. Smart enough to learn it hurt.
I had to teach my own Heeler/ Std Poodle mix to retrieve- treats and repetition. She just wasn't interested in bringing things back. She's pretty good now, but won't play ball incessantly, the ball is just a way to play with ME. She's good for about six tosses. She'd rather play tug-o-war, more personal I guess.
Now she points sometimes, other times she hunkers down and stalks, like shepherds do with a flock. Gets hyper around a group of people- She doesn't know whether to point, retrieve, or herd. Any way, she is entertaining.
