Tim,
On my trailer, just like yours, check the post below about the camper, and for those springs I took them apart, painted them and put them back together.
Now that I've pulled it and used it a few times, there is paint dust and just a smidgen of rust dust coming from inbetween all the leafs. (I pulled it in wet weather a few times.)
I did the same with the spring packs on the 48 FF, but now I'm thinking it was really needed.
Not that I'm an expert, but the leafs on my trailer seem to be no big deal it was done.
