the job you speak of (customer service monitor) is in high demand. companies are doing pr in reverse i.e. they run their business poorly and monitor the web and then manage problems by exception.
im in the logistics business and my dad used to work for ups. before computers and barcodes, they managed by exception meaning they assumed all packages were delivered on time. when a complaint or lost package was reported, they threw a ton of resources at it and found the problem. it worked for them and gave customers the impression that their package was important and well cared for in the system.
