Fuel Gauge Question

Can I use a '63 sending unit with a '53 fuel gauge? I heard one worked on one wire while the other used two, but don't know. I'm planing on going 12 volt. There is a guage set on eBay right now, he says it will fit '53 to '67 but acording to the t137 site it'll work on '54,'55 and possibly some '56. Thanks in Advance, Leon
