As I understand it, what the pertronix gizmo does, besides replace the points, which by itself shouldn't affect the performance, is it delivers a series of closely spaced sparks rather than just one spark. I don't know if it has a capacitor discharge feature to make a hotter spark or not, but it might. The theory with the multiple sparks is to make it more likely to ignite the mix under marginal conditions.
