By now, it should be no secret that I would take no offense to being labeled a purest or a traditionalist. Anti technology? I guess I would have to agree to feeling that way also, to a point. I am reluctantly employed as a Senior Designer in an Engineering company and I seldom find myself impressed with what we come up with as far as mechanical designs today. We really have nothing on the guys who designed steam locomotives, threshing machines, etc. years ago. We just kind of take existing technology that was designed with pencil and paper and use a computer to quickly rearrange it to fit our current needs.
But that is all beside the point. I wanted to know how electronic ignition would make our 230 L-heads run better. You partially answered my question by pointing out that one of the benefits of electronic ignition would be "improved performance." I can imagine that faster acceleration, better gas mileage, lower engine temperatures, longer engine life, faster warm up, not too rich fuel mixture, not too lean fuel mixture, less emissions, etc. could all be considered as possible gains encompassed under the description of improved performance. I was hoping to nail it down a little better.
If I sound bitter, it is not directed at you. You tried to answer my question and I thank your for that. What is frosting my cake at the moment is how, after I asked my question, this has seemed to have the potential to quickly turn into a discussion with claims of one being superior to the other, or one more reliable than the other, or "why don’t they……?"
If a better running engine could be expected, I am okay with that, if I think I need a better running engine. If bling is expected, I am okay with that too, if I think I need more bling.
