In 25 years of Emergency Medicine I have never seen a belted driver/passenger injured worse than a non belted. Indeed I have never had a belted fatality, though I am sure that it does occur. Those that do not wear belts are 100,000,000 times as likely to die or suffer serious injury.
Everyone has a tale about someone being miracously thrown from the car and being saved...PURE BS. Again in 25 years of emergency medicine I have never seen or heard of someone thrown from a car that did not suffer severe injuries. It's like the person that falls from the 20th story of a building and walks away...yeah sure.
ALWAYS wear your seatbelt.
