I think it would have been a "power assist" type of steering setup. Meaning that theres a valve in the draglink that actuates a double-acting ram that is conected to the tierod, and secured to the axle housing. Many Dodge cars had a pump that mounted on the back of the generator.
I have a picture of this setup off of a 1958 D700 truck. I'll see if I can dig it up.
