my truck I ahve being painted right now is getting powder coating on the doors, fenders, hood and some small parts. It is a decsion made by the painter. He likes it as a base and now they have special bondos made just for sticking to powder coating. then he will paint the whole thing. I think it is a good idea if you cant tell after painting. Paint in my opinion looks more rich. the hot road guys are now powder coating whole bodies.
