It just leaves slight surface rust, but it does take a lot of drying . I bet with air a tailgate would take a couple of minutes & lots less sand,,, I have one of those & I posted before,, it worked great for taking loose paint off siding,, was good on greasy engine blocks too but slow & messy & used lots of sand. Also good where sparks are a hazard
