The only thing in the ignition system that's SUPPOSED to be grounded is the points, and they're always well-grounded through their mounting screw and the distributor. A "bad ground" causing it to cut out when you hit a bump would more likely be something getting grounded that wasn't supposed to, like a wire cut through and rubbing on something. There are lots of possibilities. He just has to dig into it and start looking, starting with the easy stuff.
