They are there to take the weight of the plow off of the front leaf springs and put the weight on the axle in the raised position. The axle can pivot down away in the case that side hits a low spot (pot hole)due to the way the booster bracket is manufactured.
The boost cylinders are on a 3 way T fitting so all 3 are "tied" together. Raise by pressure and gravity takes over to lower. Once the plow is down, its a basically a float position. Hope this helps. Pictures explain better than I can. see link below
