OT WWII box ID needed

Guys,

This box was given to me several years ago by a friend of mine who served on a hospital ship in WWII. Does anyone know what this box was for? Or know of good sites where I might find an answer?

I am guessing it is some sort of Navy Medical item box, but that may not be true.

It measures about 11 1/2" x 9" x 9"
