I have never seen the inside of a rockwell, but a guy would have to figure which way the crown gear was thrusting the pinion & putting the additional presure on one of those cone bearings. I would think if the roller bearing was bad it would be noisy all the time. If the bearing is bad enough (or the pinion nut backed off) you may be able to move the pinion in & out by hand.
