The steering gear assembly was manufactured with shims installed. As the thrust bearings wear, shims are removed to take up end play. The problem which I have is that all of the shims have ben removed and I still have excessive end play. I would like to replace the thrust bearings but the shop manual does not cover this procedure. I may be better off finding a replacement steering gear assembly. The truck is a '47 WD-20. This is a civilian one-ton truck. The steering gear in the truck is not the correct one according to the shop manual. I have the steering gear used on WDX models.
