Obviously there are a few things only a good machine shop should do, but the majority of the work can be done by someone with a little mechanical knoweledge and some basic hand tools. The flathead six is a very simple and forgiving motor. If you get into trouble, well that's what the forum is for. When I first got into this I had a motor rebuilt by a "professional" and it wound up costing me about $2200!! Since then, I've rebuilt a 230 industrial engine and have a 318 on the stand right now. Total for both will be around $1500 if that. Plus every time I pick up a wrench I learn something new. Good luck either way you go.
