Obviously, the pre-lube idea is a good idea.
I'm told the biggest lubrication challenge in a rebuilt older engine is the camshaft/flat tappet interface. This is an issue of concern with modern motor oils that have little Ca, Zn or P additives. Google for an additive called ZDDP and believe half of what they tell you. Some guys run Rotella, some use the Royal Purple break-in oil, some add a pint of red (4 cyl)STP.
I've been advised by a pro engine rebuilder to run the engine between 1500 and 2500 rpm for 20 minutes to get the cam settled - before actually driving the vehicle.
This has worked for me.
