Ole, Dave summed up it well with his plumbing comparison.
A smaller pulley is the cheapest solution for higher amps at idle,with marginal success.
For the permanent solution a heavy duty,
Leece-Neville system is required.
Available up to 320 amps with more than half that amperage at idle.
That's why there almost always installed on ambulance's and fire trucks.
The old Chrysler 100 amp system of the late 60's/70's did a fair job also.
FYI
Three wire Delco's are much better for conversions than the one wire type,as it's "sensing" wire monitors battery voltage much better.
