I don't know what issues 3rd gens have but all early trucks do not have the 53 block and fortunately mine does not. they had a casting flaw or something and would split the side of the block length wise. If you buy a truck with a 53 block, check to see if someone has welded or patched the side of the block, it should be real noticeable. I would stay away from it personally.
also 24 valve 2nd gen trucks have lift pump issues and more electronics. I think 96 is the last of the mechanical engine/trans and 97/98 had electronic auto trans only, 98 1/2 on had electronic engine.
3/4 ton auto's have a dana 70 rear w dana 80 optional and 1tons have a dana 80
also the transfer case has 2 versions 241hd and 241dhd the 241dhd can handle a lot more.
