Sounds like about 1/4" is ok. I'm not sure why some of my tires have almost no gap but I guess like Chris said as long as there is some gap it's ok. then you know the ring is seated in the groove all the way. I'm not sure why rims and rings would have to be matched. When you buy them from VPW they don't come as a set. Why would Budd not be consistant with their wheel sizes and rings, doesn't make any sense to have a bunch of different wheel sizes. Just my 02
