Take the alternator to a rebuild shop and have them set the RPM that it kicks in at much lower. I had it done on mine. I can not remember exactly what they did but it fixed my problem. I had the same issue as you it was not kicking in until a very high RPM. They set the 1 wire ones that way for some reason. It cost a couple of bucks to have it done.
