The problem is mixing an on-line auction listing with a regular local want-ad or sign-on-the-truck listing. If you list a truck for $1000 on ebay, as a fixed-price listing (not an auction + "buy it now" listing, or an auction with a reserve), $900 in the local paper, and $1100 with a sign in the window, that's fine. Whoever sees whatever ad and shows up in person with cash in hand and makes you an offer you like gets the truck. If some guy shows up an hour after you've sold it for $800 and says "I'd have gave you $1100 for it", you can be sorry you didn't wait and he can be sorry that he wasn't quicker, but nobody's feeling cheated.
However, when you have people bidding in good faith in an auction, you've essentially promised them that whoever bids the highest will get it. To me, following through on the auction is a matter of keeping your word.
