sludge cleaning help

I took the 52 down to the frame and am starting the engine work. Anyone have suggestions on sludge removal in the water jacket? When I removed the freeze plugs, it was jam packed full. I don't have a steam cleaner, but if I need to I will rent one. Is there any other way to clean it out? Thanks in advance-chrisnj
