the short term issue with Chapter 11 is the labor unrest and supplier costs when the payment format is cash and carry. For the short term, parts prices would rise and quality suffer, unless the unions came to the table.
The time do do it is now, before Jan, 20, 2009. The new President could invoke powers to force negotiations and safe keeping of union contracts, so Detroit has a very small window to pull the union plug, I think it's called....fish or cut bait...
