Just learn to drive the old crash box. Thats the fun of these old trucks. If you want an automatic go buy a 1970's truck.
The key to the crash box is to learn the speed. Theres a sweet spot you have to be at in order to shift. Too fast will grind and too slow will also. Having the idle turned up on the truck due to improper tuning will also make it harder to hit the next gear without a grind.
My experience is trying to run the truck harder and faster then it wants to go will grind gears everytime.
Get in and fire the truck up. Take a deep breath and relax and enjoy the ride. If you are in a hurry or think you got to zip in and out of traffic with the old Dodge get out of it and get into a modern vehicle.
