that is exactly the reason that all my trucks get fresh gear oil in ALL the boxes every year...you can buy many buckets of gear oil for a single destroyed transmission...
ffiw, I munched a transmission in a BMW motorcycle a few years ago, the current cost for a replacement gear box is $2,400, three years ago it was $1,450 and almost a grand to rebuild. Gear oil is CHEAP.
The tranny failed due to water in the box from a bad 75 cent dust cap where the speedometer cable hooks in:-) I ran the bike an additional two years before I was able to take it off the road and fix the gear box properly. I had changed the gear oil right before a trip, and when checking it on my return, water ran out the plug.
