From everything I've read, the Japanese government does indeed provide subsidies per vehicle, in addition they slap very high tariffs on imported vehicles that prevent American built vehicles from gaining a toehold.
The Jeeps are very popular in Japan and Chrysler exports right hand drive Jeeps into Japan, but with a $25,000+/- tariff, it's hard to have too many sales.
How can they afford it?
How can they not afford to protect their industrial base and jobs, for an example look up "Rust Belt".
What is left in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania is not much....
