Norm,
If you look at the scans I included they show the Fords getting gradually better over time, and the best year is 2007. I thought that is exactly what you were saying, Detroit was getting themselves turned around, and doing a better job. The problem is they have years of reputation to make up for, and if the economy had stayed stable they may have done fine over time. Now with the economy in trouble, and their business plans still in the middle of restructuring, they are in big trouble.
As for bias, again I am only talking about the customer surveys, not the articles. How could the surveys be delayed 3 years if they are showing data for 2007 in the 2008 issue?
If you like other sources better, please show me something that has the same sort of detailed breakdown of reliability over time. I would like to see some other source for making better informed decisions.
I always thought the lifetime warranty was a way to get customers in the door, as many people sell their cars before 60,000 miles (quite a few before 30,000) anyway. Were you saying the same thing about quality when Hyundai first offered a 100,000 warranty? I hear their cars are better now, but I had some friends with real bad experiences a few years ago.
I am sure the new bumper to bumper warranty on the new Chrysler cars is great, but you yourself have written about how bad things were under the Germans, and for a while afterwords. You say they have fixed the problems, I am glad to hear it.
I am not trying to slam American car makers, I am saying that they need some serious improvements in either their PR if you and Kaegi are right, or in their product line.
Eric
