Not sure what you mean by softer. Are you talking padded? Not going to happen as the padded modern steering wheels attach differently. Also unless you have power steering there is a reason for the larger diameter steering wheel in you truck.
One option is to find a padded sterring wheel cover and slip it on. I would make sure that it laces on to make sure it does not come off.
