Book learnin' smarts verses practical experience.
I see it every day with all the Engineers around me. Some were straight A students in college, can recall every equation from memory, but are not worth a darn as far as mechanical design because they have never gained the practical experience. The best ones grew up on a farm, got the experience, maybe did not get such great grades in school so they do not do everything "by the book", but their designs solve problems, work well, and sell equipment.
It sounds like Paul has found a parts lady who can draw from practical experience and think beyond the questions the computer is asking for.
