In New York, the registration weight and fee are based upon the MGW listed on the data plate. In this state, if you were to try to register the truck with a fake (lesser) weight, you would be liable for fines and points. The inspection station also needs to correlate the weight shown on the registration document with the weight shown in the computer.
Some people try to use a lower weight to save money. Some others try to increase the weight so that they can carry more than the truck is capable of carrying. In either event, bad things can happen. Honesty is the best policy.
